What is literary criticism?

"Criticism, or more specifically, literary criticism, is the overall term for studies concerned with defining, classifying, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating works of literature."  (From A Glossary of Literary Terms, 10 ed., by M.H. Abrams and G.G. Harpham.) Many different types or theories of literary criticism have evolved historically and most pieces of literature can be examined from more than one theoretical perspective. The following selection of library databases are often used to provide access to literary criticism on authors and their works.  For criticism in books that our library or other libraries own, use the Library Search link in the Books section of this guide.
