Textbook Alternatives for Faculty

What is an ebook?

eBooks are electronic books.  There are different kinds of ebooks, different platforms, and many vendors that make this content available.  The following are a few considerations to keep in mind when selecting ebooks for your class.

  • What is the licensing on the ebook?
  • Do you have a stable url to link to the book?
  • Is the book format appropriate for your use?

eBook Licensing

Not all books are available as ebooks, and not all ebooks have every option for licensing available.  Talk to your librarian who can investigate what options exist for a title.

There are three main types of license you will see with library ebooks:

  • Limited user - typically 1-3 simultaneous users.  This option is the cheapest and is usually enough for supplementary reading.
  • Unlimited - No limits on the number of simultaneous users.  More expensive but a great option when an entire class is going to need access at the same time.
  • Unlimited DRM Free - unlimited access to users with no DRM (Digital Rights Management) restrictions on printing, saving, copying, etc. While the most expensive this option allows the most freedom for users and instructors.

Finding and Linking to an ebook

The library catalog already contains hundreds of thousands of ebooks you can link directly to.  Simply search the library catalog and use the permalink option on the library record to get a stable url that you can link directly into Brightspace.

Requesting a new ebook

The library is always happy to purchase books and other materials to add to the collection upon request.  If there is an item you'd like to have made available for your classes, please contact your subject librarian or use the link below.

That said, the library does NOT purchase print copies of textbooks currently used in classes.  The cost would be prohibitive and we would not be able to provide sufficient copies to meet student need.  If an ebook copy is available, we would be happy to explore that option. Sadly, many common textbooks, typically those used for survey courses, are not available for the library to purchase because of publisher embargos.
