Chemistry Resources: Standards, Guidelines, etc.

What are standards?

A standard is a rule or guideline for a product, process, material, or method created to establish uniformity, interchangeability, or quality. A standard is typically developed by professional organizations, which also update the standard regularly. They may go by many names such as Standard, Guideline, Best Practices, or similar, but they all have the same purpose.  You may also see locally produced standards specific to a workplace or lab.

In chemistry, you will often find standards related to lab safety, material handling, and processes related to the development or use of something.  Here are a few examples:

Sources for Standards

The first place to look for a standard is in the professional literature. Standards are often produced by professional organizations and shared either on websites or in publications from the organization.

There are some collections of standards available but these are not comprehensive.
