Algeria in Flames
It is July 1958. War has been ongoing in Algeria for the last four years as FLN (National Liberation Front) fighters have been engaged in battle with French forces for independence. French police and military response has been swift and brutal, but the FLN continues to carry out guerrilla actions against both French settlers and Algerians not viewed as fully committed to the cause of independence. But the world is watching. International opinion swings between the two sides, disgusted at FLN terrorism, but also at revelations of French practice of torture and other extraordinary measures. How will this conflict come to an end? What right does France have to control its colony in North Africa? Is there an Algerian nation and if so, is it entitled to autonomy and independence? What happens to the 1 million European settlers in Algeria and their Algerian supporters? Both sides need to make their voices heard in a best effort to see the conflict end favorably for their populations!
