Library Quick Facts

  • The library opened in 1972, following the historic Library Book Walk from Kettler Hall.
  • The Walter E. Helmke Library was named in 1977 for the prominent Fort Wayne attorney and active member of the I.U. Board of Trustees and the Indiana-Purdue Foundation. Walter E. Helmke was the grandfather of Fort Wayne's former mayor Paul Helmke.
  • Our library building is 113,000 square feet in size, with four stories and a basement.
  • The library is open 90 hours a week during regular fall and spring semesters.
  • Library collections contain more than 300,000 books and bound periodicals.
  • The library provides online access 24/7 to more than 40,000 e-journals, e-books, and other electronic resources.
  • Books, periodicals, and most library materials are shelved by the Library of Congress classification system in call number order.
  • We are one of only three U.S. federal depository libraries in northeast Indiana, serving Indiana's 3rd Congressional District and providing public access to local, state, federal, and international government information.
